Škoda Auto experiencing SAP downtime due to database error

Škoda Auto logoBiggest car manufacturer in Czech republic – Škoda Audo, can not consign any new cars from their factory in Mladá Boleslav or order new parts. Current situation is caused by software error in database, that is used by some of their SAP applications. Team of experts in Škoda is trying to fix this software error.

Škoda Auto do not have Disaster Recovery plan in place for this event and currently only solution to ensure their business continuity and minimize business impact is usage of old “pen and papper” approach to produce paper documentation. There is about 300 trucks waiting to be loaded near by Škoda Auto factory.

It is surprising that company with approx. $13.5 billion USD turnover and $1.9 billion USD profit in 2010 do not have a propper Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity management plan in place. Well… or is it? After so long time in Disaster Recovery industry I need to admit that I know even bigger organizations accross industries who are not sufficiently protected against natural and human-made disasters or logical errors.
