NetApp storage infrastructure is probably the most complex and complicated environment, you have in your datacenter, even though NetApp try its best to deliver easy-to-use product, with such a great tools such as SnapManager for Oracle, SnapManager for SAP, SnapManager for Exchange, Virtual Storage Console, SnapMirror, SnapVault,… truth is, your environment is and will be more complex compared to legacy SAN storage.

It might be so, that your organization do not have enough in-house resources to asses, plan, deploy and operate complex NetApp storage environment, and you need a trusted partner, to help you deal with this challenge, to accelerate your ROI and reduce your TCO.
We have long experience with NetApp storage environments from different organizations, we have assessed, planned, deployed many projects, many NetApp filers and supported very complex and rapidly growing infrastructures. See our list of projects for more details about our previous projects.
Marek Stopka, our senior consultant have developed and implemented SAP solution, Tieto Dynamic SAP Landscape for M-real, Metsäliitto and Metsä-Botnia while working for Tieto.
During this project we have developed new flexible infrastructure for running SAP on commodity open systems hardware using NetApp MetroCluster storage system. SAP is running on RedHat Linux operating system and use NFS as storage access protocol. SnapManager for SAP has been taken advantage of for backups, with disk-to-disk backup to NearStore storage and backup offload to tape using NDMP protocol.
For internal Tieto customer, I have assessed, designed and deployed combination of NetApp MetroCluster storage and HP Integrity Superdome servers with HP-UX operating system to run Oracle database and Oracle EBS with SnapManager for Oracle. We used disk-to-disk backup to NearStore storage facilitating SnapVault.
During this project, we have improved Tieto Dynamic SAP Landscape and based on Marek Stopka’s proposal, we added HA storage system with SATA drives and FlexCache modules for primary data. In original design, production, test and development systems has been all located on NetApp MetroCluster, in improved design we have offloaded test and development systems to this new NetApp filer, lowering load on MetroCluster and bringing down costs significantly. We have again used NFS as a storage access protocol.
Next logical step has been taken, and we have migrated M-Real test and development SAP systems to this new SATA NetApp HA cluster to lower cost for M-Real.
I have participated in overall design for Real Time flexible cloud infrastructure build on NetApp storage using Cisco UCS technology (UCS blades, Nexus switches) orchestrated by BMC software and proof of concept testing of builded infrastructure.
We have strongly engaged with technology vendors, NetApp, Cisco, BMC and CA during this project, overall design was very similar to NetApp/Cisco FlexPod solution. We have used Cisco UCS server blades and Cisco Nexus switches with NetApp MetroCluster. Later on, similar design has been used in Tieto Germany datacenter.
For Orion, Finnish pharmaceuticals company, I have assessed, designed and deployed Write Once Read Many archiving solution to ensure GxP compliance based on NetApp FAS series with NetApp SnapLock Enterprise technology. We have used SnapLock on a primary data storage system, and backed up data using SnapVault to NearStore storage system, from which data has been offloaded to tape with 10 years retention using NDMP.
Several retention periods has been applied to different datasets based on customer requirements for regulatory compliance.
